Children's Activities in Edmond, OK

Situated on the northern outskirts of Oklahoma City's metropolitan area with the famous Route 66 running through town is the city of Edmond, Oklahoma, with a population of more that 81,000, as of 2010. Edmond features a number of places where activities for children are offered, including numerous parks to enjoy, an aquatic center to explore, family events and festivals to attend and more.
  1. Parks and Recreation Events

    • Many of the parks in Edmond offer a variety of activities, including some that are specifically designed for children to participate in. Among these are an annual kid's fishing derby for children ages of 5 to 15 held at Spring Creek Park. Kids can go fishing from 8 a.m. until 11 a.m., and they are given prizes for their catches. Kids must have a parent or guardian attending this event with them. Another event featured by the Edmond Department of Parks and Recreation is the Storybook Forest walk. Kids walk through the park as they collect candy given out by characters from popular storybooks. A hay ride follows with a marshmallow roast to end the day.

    Frontier City Theme Park

    • Frontier City Theme Park boasts 40 acres of water rides, thrill rides, kids rides and family rides, offering rides for kids of all ages. Several roller coasters can be found within the park. There are shows to enjoy throughout the day such as the Wild-West Gunfighter Stunt Show and the Doc Snookers Medicine Man Show. Summer concerts and special events can be seen starting from early in April until the season ends at the end of October.

    National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum

    • First opened in 1955, the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum offers a high-quality collection of artifacts and Western arts that are internationally renowned. The museum has tours that are specifically designed for children to enjoy and to learn about the history of the old Western culture. Some of the exhibits include a cowboy gallery, monumental sculptures, a rodeo gallery and a children's cowboy corral.

    Oklahoma City Zoo

    • The Oklahoma City Zoo is situated just a few minutes to the south of Edmond. The exhibits include animals such as a variety of primates, elephants, lions, tigers, bears, an aquatic center and a butterfly garden. It also features a hands-on children's zoo area that is complete with a variety of birds from around the world. Shows that include animals, as well as multiple children's programs, are available throughout the year.
