Children can have year-round fun at the indoor CoCo Key Water Resort. The 45,000-square-foot park features an interactive play island geared for children 3 to 10 with water slides, water cannons and a splash area. An activity pool for kids 6 and older includes nets for water basketball. Families can take a tube ride together along a lazy river. On warm days, an outdoor deck allows children to soak up the sun Kids can take a break from the water activities by heading to a video game arcade.
The Mattatuck Museum Arts and History Center teaches children about the city's history through hands-on activities. The Orton P. Camp Jr. Gallery has interactive exhibits that let children work on a button production line and build their own village equipped with homes, shops and churches. Kids can play a pinball game with a theme based on the development of a 19th century factory in the city. Additionally, children can learn about slavery through Fortune, a slave kept by a Waterbury doctor in the late 1700s.
The Seven Angels Theatre introduces kids to the stage with its Children's Theatre and productions like "Romeo & Juliet" and "School House Rock Live." Children that are in the Waterbury area for an extended time in the summer, fall and spring can take youth acting classes, as well as attend a summer theatre camp. The theatre also presents shows may also appeal to older children, like "To Kill A Mockingbird."
Timexpo: The Timex Museum takes visitors back through time by telling the history of Timex clocks and watches. The Timex Corporation started as the Waterbury Clock Company in the mid-1800s and became Timex in 1950. Children will enjoy the collection of Mickey Mouse pieces. The Timexpo: The Timex Museum also has interactive activities such as creating a paper wrist watch, and assembling and decorating a working clock. The varied exhibits include learning about timekeeping's history, including the use of sand glasses, shadow sticks, sundials and water clocks. Children may like items made by the Waterbury Clock Company for the military during World War I and World War II, such as wristwatches and fuses.
