Children's Activities in Kaiserslautern, Germany

Kaiserslautern is 50 miles from the cities of Wiesbaden and Frankfurt and the Frankfurt-Hahn Airport (HHN) in the Rhineland region of Germany. Bordered by the Palatinate Forest (Naturpark Pfälzer Wald), this is a popular vacation area. Children's activities in Kaiserslautern include attending football matches at the Fritz-Walter Stadium, home of the "Red Devils" football club, visiting museums and outdoor programs in the city's parks.
  1. The Gartenschau

    • The Gartenschau, or Garden Fair, is affectionately known as "Dino Park" to its regulars because it contains the largest outdoor collection of life-sized dinosaurs in Europe. Over 80 dinosaurs stand scattered around the park, clearly labeled in English and German by species, history and habitat, including a 30-meter Hylonomus and the 27-meter Diplodocus. For a small fee, young children can ride through the park in a special "Dinowagen," carts pulled by their parents. Other park attractions include a water playground, skate park and volleyball court. Opening hours for the park, as of 2010, are Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m. and from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. during school holidays. Wheelchairs are available for loan to disabled visitors and dogs are not permitted in the park; they may be left in kennels at the main entrance.

    The Broadway Kino Theater

    • The Broadway Kino Theater, located behind McDonald's restaurant, is less than six miles along the E50 from the center of Kaiserslautern. Movies screened in the original language at this theater is what makes it unique, this is a rarity in Germany. Special family shows and "Broadway Bargain-Tuesday" offer reduced rates. The theater screens an eclectic mix of art house movies, family-friendly titles and hits like Avatar in 3-D, and features surround sound. Tickets for shows may be reserved by telephone. A snack bar sells popcorn, candy, nachos and soft drinks; beer is on sale to adult guests. As of 2010, Kino's is open daily with times for afternoon and evening showings varying each week. The theater is a nonsmoking establishment.

    Zoo-Gesellschaft Kaiserslautern

    • The Kaiserslautern Zoo, located in the western suburbs of the city, is a vast 17 acres and features 60 species of animals. Zoo attractions include a children's playground, nature trail, restaurant, fairground and a beer garden for adults; there are regular special events at festivals and holidays, like night walks through the facility at Christmas. Existing and planned exhibits include Amazon, savanna, swamp and local farm environments which teach children about the importance of animal conservation and habitat protection. Guided tours, children's birthday parties and group tour facilities are available. Special rates are available for groups of 10 or more guests; there is no charge for school and pre-school guided tours with advance booking. As of 2010, the Kaiserslautern Zoo is open daily from April to August between 8:30 a.m. and 6:30 p.m. and from September to March between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.
