Named for the Irish city, the Belfast River in Fort Stewart offers fishing as well as other family activities including a swimming and picnicking area. Kids who enjoy fishing with their parents will have fun waiting for largemouth bass, bluegill and black crappie to bite their lines. A pier and shore fishing access are also available. The Fort Stewart ponds, or the 22 lakes that take up 1,437 acres in Fort Stewart, are also available for fishing and also feature a swimming and picnic area.
Take the kids bowling while visiting Fort Stewart. Kids' lanes are available at Marne Lanes (stewartmwr.com) in Fort Stewart, while youth leagues are also available. A dining room is on premise featuring kid-friendly food including pizza, hot wings, burgers and fried chicken. The bowling alley also has space available for hosting children's birthday parties. Electronic bingo is another game option that is available in Fort Stewart, and Stewart Lanes is another bowling alley on premise at the fort and offers 12 lanes of "extreme bowling," as well as bumper lanes for kids.
The Fort Stewart military base is home to three pools -- two outdoor and one indoor, all of which offer swimming lessons and water aerobics. The facility's Corkan Swimming Pool features a water slide and baby pool as well as lap lanes for older children and adults. Both Corkan and the other outdoor pool, the Bryan Village Swimming Pool, feature free admission for children under 4. Newman Swimming Pool is an indoor pool open year-round, though the Fort Stewart website recommends calling ahead to ensure open swimming is available that day.
The Fort Stewart Library is stocked with more than 55,000 books that include current and popular fiction. A small children's room is available, as well as computers, access to more than 200 magazines and newspapers from all over the world, and DVD movies. While there are no official story hours/children's programs offered in the library, you can still spend quiet time in the children's room reading to your child. Children can spend a rainy, cold or hot day indoors with a good book or spend time browsing educational children's sites on one of the library's computers.
