Washington, D.C., is America's famed national capital. But the city is not just a center for politics and world policy -- it is also an educational and enjoyable center full of activities for children. There are many free activities for children in Washington, D.C., and the surrounding area.
  1. Smithsonian

    • Washington, D.C., is home to the Smithsonian Institute, a collection of world class, free museums in the center of D.C. There are no entrance fees for the museums, which include the Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, the National Museum of Art, and many others. The Museum of Natural History is a prime spot for children because it lets their imaginations run wild as they look at the skeletons of dinosaurs, explore oceanic depths and marvel at stuffed animals.
      The National Air and Space Museum also is perfect to occupy children's imaginations. With real planes hanging from the ceiling and free videos on the history of flight, visiting this museum is a treat. Included in this museum is one of Amelia Earhart's planes and the Spirit of St. Louis, the plane Charles Lindbergh flew across the Atlantic. The National Museum of Art provides and opportunity for children to view some of the world's most beautiful art work. Children may not be able to completely appreciate the magnitude of the work in the museum, but the stunning colors of the Impressionists, the statues lining the halls, the realistic portraits and the structure of the marble museum is enough to keep a child entertained for hours.

    The National Zoo

    • Visiting the National Zoo is a way for children to see conservation efforts taking place to help restore the population of some of the world's most endangered species. Paying a visit to Tai Shan, the third U.S.-born panda, is a once in a lifetime opportunity to see one of the world's most magical creatures.

    Nation Theatre

    • The National Theatre provides free family fun with its "Saturday Morning at the National" play series. Tickets are limited and are handed out on a first come, first served basis. Plays and content vary.

    The National Mall and Washington Monument

    • The National Mall is an expansive green space lined with trees that's perfect for an afternoon picnic. At the head of the Mall stands the megalithic Washington Monument. This massive stone monument is open for tours depending on restoration. At the top of the 555-foot-tall tower, children can see a stunning view of the nation's capital and surrounding areas.

    Rock Creek Park

    • The Rock Creek Park Planetarium offers a magical and free opportunity to view the stars. On Saturdays and Sundays, the Planetarium presents a show that teaches children about the constellations. In the evenings, children can look through the massive telescope and view the constellations and planets.
