Free Travel Guide for Washington D.C.

The historical and memorial attractions in the Washington D.C. area are plentiful. Free and paid attractions make this an excellent location to take a family vacation. Tours are available to provide easy transportation around the city. Many attractions are close enough together that walking between them is an option.

  1. Smithsonian Institution

    • The Smithsonian Institution is composed of 19 museums, a National Zoo and nine different research centers. The 19 museums are all free to visit. Plan on at least three full days at the Smithsonian to visit all 19 museums. The National Zoo is another good daylong visit. Each individual building houses a different type of artifact. The Museum of Natural History provides a look at everything related to nature. Visiting that museum only will take four to six hours.

    The National Mall

    • The National Mall is an area that is west of the United States Capital building. Lincoln Memorial stands at the west end of the area. It is a 38-fluted Doric column neoclassical building that memorializes Lincoln and the historical moments in his life. The statue of Lincoln is 19 feet tall and dominates the interior. A feeling of historical importance is present within the building that houses the memorial.

      Other historic monuments and memorials in the National Mall area include the U.S. Capitol, Ulysses S. Grant Memorial, National Gallery of Art, National Museum of the American Indian, National Air and Space Museum, National Museum of Natural History, Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, Smithsonian Castle, National Museum of American History, Washington Monument, World War II Memorial, Vietnam Memorial and Korean War Veterans Memorial.

      Numerous gift shops and eating vendors are present within the area. The gift shops are all quaint, with a unique character. The employees provide service along with information concerning the attractions in the area.

    Arlington Cemetery

    • Arlington National Cemetery is the most famous cemetery in the United States. It is home to veterans from as early as the Civil War. Seeing the acres of white headstones is a humbling experience. Arlington National Cemetery is open to the public 365 days per year, for a small fee. Everyone entering the area will find ample parking in a paid parking lot. The changing of the guard at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier is an enthralling experience.

    Chinatown

    • Chinatown provides a tourist with the culture of Asia. The buildings, restaurants and gift shops provide authentic Asian articles. The Chinatown Community Cultural Center offers a plethora of information about the cultural heritage of Asian Americans residing in the United States. Gallery Place is the home for the Cultural Center and showcases 3,000 square feet of historical information.

    Dinner Theaters

    • Enjoy an evening out at one of Washington's dinner theaters. Glenn Gary's Parlor Magic and Comedy Show, Mystery Dinner Playhouse or Lazy Susan Dinner Theater each offer guests an usual dinner setting. Children all enjoy Glenn Gary's Parlor Magic and Comedy Show. The Mystery Dinner Playhouse and Lazy Susan Dinner Theater are for adults or older children who can understand the plot.
