The brick-paved plaza around the historic Faneuil Hall Marketplace make it a romantic place for couples to enjoy Boston and do some shopping (see Resources). In 1742, Peter Faneuil, the city's wealthiest merchant, built the hall, which was filled with fishermen, meat sellers, farmers and other merchants selling their wares. Many famous patriots, from Samuel Adams and George Washington to Bill Clinton and Ted Kennedy, have set foot in Faneuil Hall or Quincy Market. Now the marketplace is home to a number of shops and restaurants. Couples looking to spend some money or just take a walk in an area rich with history will appreciate Faneuil Hall.
Boston Public Garden provides a place to seek refuge and relaxation after a busy day of exploring the streets of Boston. The swan boats on the lake of the Public Garden provide a fun and relaxing activity for couples who feel like taking part in a Boston tradition. The first swan boats were introduced to the Public Garden lagoon in 1877, when Robert Paget developed a pedal-powered catamaran to carry passengers around the body of water. From the benches of the swan boats, couples can enjoy the beauty of the Public Garden, the rolling lawns of Boston Common and the glistening buildings that line the park.
Massachusetts' shoreline is home to many gorgeous beaches that are ideal for summertime activities such as relaxing on the beach, building sand castles, playing volleyball, picnicking, swimming and splashing in the waves. Coastal communities, such as those of Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard, are especially charming. Here, couples can explore the shops downtown, ride bikes and eat fresh seafood after a long day at the beach.
Located on the western side of the state, the Berkshires offer the splendor of the outdoors: winding rivers, lush forests and mountains. With the wide variety of trail difficulties, couples are sure to find a hike that matches their idea of a perfect hike. Field Farm at Williamstown, for instance, features 296 acres of fields and woodlands that are well suited for couples looking for a leisurely exploration of nature (see Resources). Other trails, such the Appalachian Trail, are more challenging and better for couples who want a more demanding adventure.
