What Activities Can I Do for Free in Boston?

Visit historical Boston, one of America's oldest cities. Boston offers plenty of free attractions and activities including cultural facilities, historical tours and educational institutions. Visitors can walk along several historic trails framed by the bright fall foliage colors that New England is known for.
  1. Freedom Trail

    • Take a tour along the Freedom Trail, a free, self-guided walking tour that takes you to 16 historical sites. Just follow the red bricks and red-painted lines along the trail that connect the landmarks. The trail is 2.5-miles long and traditionally starts from the Visitor Information Center on Boston Common but guests can begin their walking tour at any point along the trail. According to Boston.gov, the tour typically takes two to three hours. Historical sights include Faneuil Hall, Old North Church, Paul Revere's house, Old State House and more.

    Wine and Brewery Tastings

    • Participate in brewery tours and wine tastings in the city. Wine sellers such as Best Cellars on Boylston Street offers free wine tastings on weeknights from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. and also on weekends from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. If you prefer beer, stop by the Sam Adams Brewery and sign up for free guided tours of their facility. Appointments are not required but call ahead as times and availability may change.

    Museums

    • Visit museums such as the Commonwealth Museum on Morrissey Boulevard and Museum of Fine Arts on Huntington Avenue. The Commonwealth Museum always offers free admissions while the Museum of Fine Arts has complimentary admission on varying dates and special events. Guests are welcome to marvel at rare and original 17th century documents and artifacts at the Commonwealth Museum on Morrissey Blvd. The museum features exhibits like Le Grand Dérangement: The Acadian Exile in Massachusetts, 1755-1766. This exhibit showcases how the Acadians and French inhabitants of Nova Scotia came to the state and became some of its first inhabitants.

    Boston Public Library

    • Tour the Boston Public Library and enjoy art exhibits, workshops, lectures and other special events at no cost. Various exhibits are displayed including Greetings from Boston Vintage Postcards. The Black Gold Film Series shows films such as "Ray" and "Million Dollar Baby." Take an art and architecture guided tour of the building during scheduled days; note that tour times may vary each day. Bring the kids along on weekday mornings for family story time with activities like reading, singing and art crafts.
