Why was Jamaica divided into counties and parishes?

Jamaica was initially divided into seven parishes during the British colonial period: Kingston, St. Andrew, St. Thomas, Portland, St. George, Clarendon, and St. Catherine.

However, this division was primarily used for administrative and religious purposes.

It wasn't until the middle of the 19th century that further sub-divisions occurred within these original parishes. Several new parishes were created from areas carved out of larger parishes; this was done to cater to population growth and the need for administrative efficiency.

By the late 19th century, the original seven parishes had grown into a total of 14 parishes - which represent Jamaica's parish divisions to this day.
