What taxes would Puerto Rico have to pay if they became a state?

Puerto Rico, as a territory of the United States, is subject to federal income taxes, but unlike the other 50 states, Puerto Rico does not pay federal corporate income tax, payroll tax, estate tax, or gift tax. * Payroll Tax: An estimated $1.4 billion in federal payroll taxes would be collected from businesses in Puerto Rico, including Social Security and Medicare taxes.

* Estate Tax: An estimated $140 million would be collected from Puerto Rico residents under the estate tax.

* Gift Tax: An estimated $100 million would be collected from Puerto Rico residents under the gift tax.
