Varadero started out as a summer vacation retreat in the 1940s. In the last few years, hotels have started to ring the shoreline. The recently built Plaza America Conference Center makes the area attractive for incentive and business conference travel.
Varadero has its own airport. The Juan Gualberto Gomez International Airport services flights from North America, Central America and South America, Europe, Africa and other Caribbean locales.
Varadero has restaurants that specialize in many cuisines, including Italian, Spanish, Asian and, of course, Cuban. Barbecued fish and meats are popular choices.
There are plenty of cabarets in Varadero offering both Cuban and internationally influenced music and drinks. Moviegoers will find both Cuban and foreign films, shown with Spanish subtitles.
Local sightseeing spots include Bellmar Cave, the Museum of Municipal History, the Dolphin Aquarium and the multi-recreational Josone Park.
Travel to Cuba by United States citizens is restricted and must be licensed and approved by the U.S. Department of State prior to travel.
