First, do your homework before you go to Jamaica. Check on the U.S. Department Of State website (www.state.gov), as they offer travel tips for specific countries. For instance, if you look at their information on Jamaica, they would advise against going to certain parts of Kingston, the capitol city. Fortunately, Kingston is the business center of Jamaica, not the tourist center! If you are like the average first-time vacationer to the country, you will probably be traveling to the areas of Ocho Rios, Negril, or Montego Bay. These areas are established tourist areas and are well patrolled by the Jamaican Police. Checking the U.S. State Department website is advised before embarking on any foreign travel to get the latest updates on specific travel recommendations and warnings for your destination.

Talk to a travel agent and ask them if they have any advice on that destination. It's very possible that they have been to Jamaica and have firsthand knowledge of places to go AND not go when you get there! Before we went, our travel agent advised us in many ways that were very helpful once we got there. Also, if you know someone personally that has been there, get their recommendations, too. It's always good to talk to someone that has experienced the island themselves.

Use Common Sense! In Jamaica, like any country you are not a native of, play it safe. In particular:
      1. Don't go unescorted into the nearby towns. You are apt to wander into an unsafe area without knowing it if you are going on your own.
      2. Don't ride the public bus transportation. Jamaica has a great taxi/shuttle company called JUTA Tours that is very safe. Many resorts contract with them for their guest pickups.
      3. Stay on the resort property unless you are going on one of the guided excursions they offer. These excursions include a knowledgeable local guide and transportation to and from your destination. Stay with the group when you arrive there.
      4. Don't rent a car! This just invites more trouble than it's worth. Different traffic laws, crazy drivers, and possibly having to deal with the local police are all good reasons to avoid putting yourself into that situation. Take a taxi if you have to go somewhere on your own!
      5. If you are offered ganga, herbal, weed, marijuana, or whatever they will call it,..., say no! It is plentiful there, known for being potent, and a great way to get yourself in trouble.
