The Prime Minister of Guyana is the head of government of Guyana. They are responsible for:
- Providing political leadership and direction for the government
- Overseeing the day-to-day operations of the government
- Coordinating the work of the various ministries and government agencies
- Representing Guyana in international affairs
- Appointing and dismissing ministers of the government
- Acting as the commander-in-chief of the armed forces
- Advising the President on matters of state
The Prime Minister is also the leader of the majority party in the National Assembly, and they are responsible for ensuring that the government has the support of the legislature.
Qualifications for the Prime Minister of Guyana
To be eligible for the position of Prime Minister of Guyana, a person must:
- Be a citizen of Guyana
- Be at least 18 years old
- Be a member of the National Assembly
- Have the support of the majority of the members of the National Assembly
Appointment of the Prime Minister of Guyana
The Prime Minister of Guyana is appointed by the President, after consulting with the leader of the majority party in the National Assembly.
Term of Office of the Prime Minister of Guyana
The Prime Minister of Guyana serves a term of five years, or until the dissolution of the National Assembly.
