- Terrigenous sediments - Sediments that originate on land and are deposited in the oceans
- Pelagic sediments - Sediments that originate in the ocean itself (e.g. biogenic sediments)
2) Biogenous Sediments
- Are mainly calcium carbonate shells of planktonic microorganisms (e.g., foraminifera, coccolithophores, and pteropods) that accumulated on the seafloor
- Siliceous oozes that consist mainly of the remains of diatoms and radiolarians
- Calcareous oozes that are composed largely of the remains of planktonic foraminifera and coccolithophores
3) Hydrogenous Sediments
- Formed by chemical precipitation of minerals from the water column itself
- Include Manganese nodules, Iron–manganese crusts, Phosphorites, Barites
