What is an undersea canyon?

An underwater canyon is a deep, narrow, and long cleft in the seafloor that often extends from a river's mouth across a continental shelf to a deep-sea basin. Submarine canyons are formed by erosion caused by the water currents of rivers and by turbidity currents carrying sediments down the continental slope.
