Climate of the Western Region (Ghana): Tropical Wet-Dry

The Western Region of Ghana (capital: Sekondi-Takoradi) has a tropical wet-dry (Aw) climate with two distinct seasons:

Seasons

• Rainy season: April – October. Heavy downpours, thunderstorms, high humidity. Peak: June–July (>300 mm/month).
• Dry season: November – March. Harmattan winds (NE, dusty, dry). Minimal rain (<50 mm/month Dec–Jan).

Temperature

• Annual average: ~27°C (81°F)
• Highs: March–April ~30°C (86°F)
• Lows: December–January ~24°C (75°F)
• Little seasonal variation—consistently warm.

Humidity

• Annual average: ~75%
• Peak: July–August ~90% (oppressive)
• Low: December–January ~60% (Harmattan)

Rainfall

• Annual: ~2,000 mm (79 in)
• Peak months: June, July (often >300 mm each)
• Dry months: Dec, Jan (<50 mm)

Winds

• SW monsoon (rainy): Moisture from Gulf of Guinea.
• NE Harmattan (dry): Dust from Sahara; reduces visibility, dries vegetation.

This climate drives the region's cocoa, oil palm, rubber, timber, and gold mining economy—and its flood/erosion challenges.
