Capital of Brazil in 2012: Brasília
Brasília has been Brazil's capital since April 21, 1960. In 2012 — as today — the capital was Brasília.
Background
- 1763–1960: Rio de Janeiro was capital.
- 1956–1960: President Juscelino Kubitschek built Brasília from scratch (Lúcio Costa plan, Oscar Niemeyer architecture).
- 1960: Inauguration; government moved.
- 2012: Brasília metro population ~2.8M; hosted Rio+20 prep events; Dilma Rousseff president.
No change since 1960. The only other city ever capital was Rio (and briefly Salvador 1549–1763).
