What languages are spoken in Central America?

Spanish is the most widely spoken language in Central America, spoken by over 35 million people in the region. It is the official language of countries including Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Guatemala, and Panama.

English is also spoken in Central America, particularly Belize and the Caribbean coast of Costa Rica and Nicaragua, as well as in some parts of Panama. English is the official language of Belize.

Portuguese is spoken in Nicaragua by a small minority, particularly in the area of Bluefields.

Indigenous Languages

- Mayan Languages: Mayan languages, such as K'iche', Mam, Q'eqchi', and Kaqchikel, are spoken by indigenous communities in Guatemala, Mexico, and Belize.

- Garifuna: Spoken by Afro-Caribbean groups, Garifuna is mainly spoken in Honduras, Guatemala, and Belize.

- Miskito: An indigenous language spoken primarily by the Miskito people, mostly residing in Nicaragua and Honduras.

- Ngäbere (Guaymí): Spoken in Panama by the Ngäbere and Buglere indigenous groups.

- Bribri: An indigenous language spoken by the Bribri people in Costa Rica.

- Cabécar: Another indigenous language spoken in Costa Rica by the Cabécar people.

- Tolupan: Spoken by the Tolupan people, residing mainly in Honduras.
