Brazil's Major Cities Are on the Atlantic Coast, Not the West

Brazil's coastline lies entirely on the Atlantic Ocean. Its largest cities are concentrated on or near this eastern seaboard:

• São Paulo (metro ~22M) — inland but close to coast.
• Rio de Janeiro (metro ~13M) — coastal.
• Brasília (capital, metro ~4.8M) — interior, planned city.
• Salvador, Fortaleza, Belo Horizonte, Recife, Porto Alegre — all eastern/coastal.

The only major city in the west (Amazon basin) is Manaus (metro ~2.7M), an industrial free-port hub 900 miles up the Amazon River from the Atlantic. It is not on a "west coast" — Brazil has no Pacific coastline.
