Where is Iran located?

Iran, officially the Islamic Republic of Iran, is a country in Western Asia. It is bordered to the northwest by Armenia and Azerbaijan, to the north by the Caspian Sea, to the northeast by Turkmenistan, to the east by Afghanistan and Pakistan, to the south by the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, and to the west by Turkey and Iraq. Iran is the 18th-largest country in the world by land area, spanning more than 1,648,195 square kilometers (636,372 square miles). With an estimated population of around 86 million, Iran is the world's 17th-most-populous country.

Iran has historically been known as Persia or Persis by Western societies. In March 1935, Reza Shah asked foreign delegates and envoys to use the term Iran in formal correspondence; since then, "Iran" or "Islamic Republic of Iran" has been used to refer to the country.
