US White Population Trends: Declining Share, Still Largest Group
The non-Hispanic white share of the US population is declining as a percentage but remains the single largest racial group.
By the Numbers (US Census)
- 2010: 63.7%
- 2020: 60.1% (non-Hispanic white alone)
- 2060 projection: ~46% (Census Bureau)
Drivers of Change
- Lower fertility rates among white women
- Immigration (primarily from Latin America & Asia)
- Growing multiracial identification
- Aging white population (median age ~44 vs. ~30 for Hispanics)
Nuance Matters
"White alone" vs. "white in combination" changes totals. Including multiracial whites, the share is higher. But the demographic trajectory is clear: the US is becoming a majority-minority nation by mid-century.
