Why are there only 13 states in southeast?

There are not only 13 states in the southeast. There are 16 states in the southeastern region of the United States. The southeastern states are Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia, and the District of Columbia.
