States Created from Uttar Pradesh: Uttarakhand (2000)
Only one new state has been carved out of Uttar Pradesh since Independence:
- Uttarakhand (formerly Uttaranchal) — created 9 November 2000 as the 27th state of India. Carved from the 13 hill districts of western UP (Kumaon & Garhwal divisions). Capital: Dehradun (interim), Gairsain (summer).
Clarification
Uttar Pradesh itself continued to exist (now 75 districts, ~240M people). No other state has been partitioned from UP. Proposals for Purvanchal (east), Bundelkhand (south), Harit Pradesh (west) remain political demands without legislative action.
Why Uttarakhand?
- Distinct hill ecology, culture, economy (tourism, hydropower, horticulture).
- Decades-long statehood movement (Uttarakhand Kranti Dal, Chipko).
- Neglect by Lucknow administration (distance, low resource allocation).
