If you are getting ready to go on an airplane trip, packing is important to get through security and avoiding extra costs that might cut into your budget. Each airline has its own set of rules, along with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) rules.
The TSA has rules regarding dangerous items and liquids that are packed in carry-on luggage. A general rule for liquids in carry-on luggage is 3 oz. or less in a one-quart bag and only one bag per person. The TSA also require that dangerous items be checked and some are prohibited.
Many airlines are charging for checked baggage. The average cost is $15 per bag, per flight. There are a few airlines that don't charge, but the majority of major carriers are charging for luggage. Additional bags go up in price.
Airlines are also restricting the size of the checked and carry-on bags. In general the average size restriction is 50 square inches for checked luggage and 36 inches or less for carry on. If you decide to risk loading a bigger bag, be aware you might get charged additional costs. Sports items or odd size items usually require an additional fee.
Airlines also have weight limits on items that are checked. After being weighed at check in, if your bag is over the weight limit, you might be asked to pay additional fees.
Airlines also ask that you do not leave your luggage unattended. This is to avoid tampering. Many of the restrictions are new or in response to security threats and upgrades for travel security.
