Are Palm Trees Native to North America?

No. The vast majority of palm species (Arecaceae) are native to tropical/subtropical regions of Africa, Asia, South America, and the Pacific.

In North America, palms appear mainly in the southern US (Florida, California, Gulf Coast, desert Southwest) where climate permits. These are either:

• Native to Mexico/Caribbean/Central America and naturally dispersed northward (e.g., Sabal palmetto in SE US).
• Introduced and cultivated ornamentals (coconut, date, queen, Mexican fan palms).

Only about 12–14 palm species are native to the continental US, mostly in Florida and the extreme southern tier.
