History of the World Trade Center, New York

1. Inception & Construction (1940s–1973)

Port Authority vision to revitalize Lower Manhattan. Architect Minoru Yamasaki, engineer Fazlur Khan. Twin Towers (1,368 ft / 110 stories) completed 1973—world's tallest until 1974. Complex included 5 low-rise buildings + Marriott Hotel.

2. Symbolism

Icon of American economic power, globalization, and engineering ambition. Also criticized for scale, aesthetics, and vulnerability.

3. 1993 Bombing

Truck bomb in North Tower garage (Feb 26). 6 killed, 1,000+ injured. Mastermind: Ramzi Yousef (Al-Qaeda linked). Exposed security gaps.

4. September 11, 2001

Hijacked AA11 & UA175 struck North & South Towers. Intense fires weakened steel; both towers collapsed (10:28 & 9:59 AM). 2,753 dead at WTC. WTC 3, 4, 5, 6, 7 destroyed/damaged.

5. Aftermath & Rebuilding

• Site cleared ("Ground Zero").
• One World Trade Center (Freedom Tower) completed 2014—1,776 ft, Western Hemisphere's tallest.
• 9/11 Memorial & Museum (footprints of Towers).
• Santiago Calatrava's Oculus (transport hub).
• 3, 4, 5 WTC rebuilt; 2 WTC pending.
