The Far East: Countries of Easternmost Asia

"Far East" is a Eurocentric historical term for the easternmost regions of Asia. While geopolitically dated, it conventionally includes these nations:

Northeast Asia

  • China (including Hong Kong, Macau)
  • Japan
  • South Korea
  • North Korea
  • Taiwan
  • Mongolia

Southeast Asia

  • Vietnam
  • Cambodia
  • Laos
  • Thailand
  • Myanmar (Burma)
  • Malaysia
  • Singapore
  • Indonesia
  • Philippines
  • Brunei
  • Timor-Leste

Oceania (Sometimes Included)

  • Papua New Guinea

Modern Usage Note: Contemporary international relations and business prefer "East Asia" (Northeast Asia) and "Southeast Asia" as more precise regional designations. "Asia-Pacific" or "Indo-Pacific" are broader frameworks including Oceania and the Americas' Pacific coast. The term "Far East" persists mainly in historical contexts and some institutional names.
