Why was the Upper East Side of Manhattan called Silk Stocking District?

The Upper East Side is not and has never been called the Silk Stocking District. It was actually a neighborhood in the Lower East Side that got its name in the late 19th century when many wealthy New Yorkers moved into townhouses there known for the fashionable female residents that wore luxurious hosiery made largely of silk.
