Virginia Colony's Foreign Relations: Dictated by Britain

Virginia Colony Had No Independent Foreign Policy

As one of Britain's thirteen original American colonies, Virginia did not conduct its own foreign relations. All diplomatic matters—treaties, trade agreements, alliances, conflicts—were managed by the British Crown and Parliament in London.

The colony's governor and assembly handled local governance, but international affairs were exclusively imperial prerogatives. This changed only after American independence when Virginia became a state within the new United States, with foreign policy shifting to the federal government.
