• Pre-1848: Part of Alta California, Mexico (loosely administered).
• 1848: Ceded to U.S. via Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo.
• 1850: Included in Utah Territory (federal).
• 1861: Nevada Territory created (March 2) from western Utah Territory—driven by Comstock Lode silver rush.
• 1864: Admitted as 36th state (October 31)—expedited for Lincoln's re-election and Civil War silver financing.

Thus, Nevada transitioned from Mexican department → U.S. unorganized land → Utah Territory → Nevada Territory → State in just 14 years, skipping any colonial-era governance.
