Which Is Closer to the Equator: Iran or Venezuela?

Venezuela is significantly closer to the equator.

  • Venezuela: Extends from ~0°40'N to ~12°12'N. Its northern coast sits just 40 miles from the equator.
  • Iran: Lies entirely between 25°N and 40°N—roughly 1,700+ miles north of the equator at its closest point.

The confusion might stem from Iran's southern coast (Bandar Abbas ~27°N) being tropical, while Venezuela's Andes create temperate zones at elevation. But latitude-wise, it's not close: Venezuela is an equatorial/tropical country; Iran is subtropical to temperate.

For reference: Quito, Ecuador (0°15'S) and Singapore (1°17'N) are truly equatorial. Caracas (10°30'N) is tropical. Tehran (35°41'N) shares latitude with Albuquerque, NM and Memphis, TN.
