What is mother country?

A mother country is a sovereign state from which a colony or another dependent territory originates, or with which it has or has had a strong historical or political association — most often through colonisation. The term was used in the context of the British Empire to refer to the United Kingdom in relation to its colonies and was widely used in other European languages, such as the French mère patrie and Spanish madre patria.
