Were Virginia and West the same state in time of 13 colonies?

Virginia and West Virginia were not the same state during the time of the 13 colonies. Virginia was one of the original 13 colonies established by the British in North America, and it included the territory that is now West Virginia. However, West Virginia became a separate state in 1863 during the American Civil War, when a group of Unionist counties in western Virginia seceded from the Confederate-controlled state of Virginia.
