Ecotourism Resorts in Belize

Sustainably-minded people who want to travel, but do not want to negatively impact the environment often choose ecotourism resorts. These resorts are constructed in a sustainable manner using local materials, low flow fixtures, and sometimes generate their own electricity. Ecotourism resorts also provide tours and excursions for their guests that range from visiting wildlife sanctuaries to indigenous villages, thus supporting the local economy and traditional ways of living. Ecotourism is popular in Belize due in part to the wide variety of ecosystems in the small country, from beaches and reef systems to mountains and jungles.
  1. Cotton Tree Lodge

    • The Cotton Tree Lodge is in the Belize jungle, on approximately 100 acres. The lodge was built using sustainable principles in order to minimize impact on the surrounding environment. The owners have implemented a reforestation program on the property where it was formerly logged and burned. The owners operate tours of the area, including cultural tours that visit a traditional Mayan village and chocolate tours that introduce tourists to fresh cacao fruit. There are also lodge-sponsored volunteer trips in conjunction with Sustainable Harvest International to educate and assist local farmers.

    Turtle Inn at Placiencia

    • This resort was founded by Francis Ford Coppola and his wife, Eleanor. In 2001, the resort was destroyed by a hurricane, and the Coppolas chose to rebuild using eco-conscious principles. The buildings were constructed using renewable and sustainable materials, locally sourced when possible. The resort has also partnered with the Southern Environmental Association of Belize and Expedition Blue Planet to help preserve the environment of the area. The beachfront resort is close to a coral reef and sponsors snorkeling activities. In addition there are rainforest excursions, trips to archaeological sites and a visit to a wildlife sanctuary.
