Honduras Travel Tips

Honduras, located in Central America between Guatemala and Nicaragua, is both a paradise off the beaten path and a mecca for ecotourism. The growing tourism sector is fueled by Honduras' affordability, beauty and appealing culture. However, like most foreign countries, adequate planning and preparation are essential for an enjoyable and safe trip.
  1. About Honduras

    • Honduras is an appealing destination for the adventurous and thrifty traveler. The country has a diverse and rich culture, beautiful islands, pristine beaches, the world's second-largest coral reef, ancient Mayan ruins and much more.
The Bay Islands are breathtaking for their scenery and ideal for their privacy and rustic charm. The Bay Islands--Roatan, Utila, and Guanaja -- each have their own appeal. For rustic charm and a laid-back atmosphere, Utila is the best choice. Guanaja is private and remote, while Roatan is the most visited and offers more modern-day luxuries. All of the Bay Islands are ideal locations for scuba diving, swimming and relaxing on the beach.

For fun on the mainland, Honduras has both urban culture and historical gems. Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras, offers visitors a chance to shop, dine and be entertained in a bustling city environment. The city is home to numerous shops, museums, restaurants and sightseeing opportunities.

For a taste of history, check out the Copan Ruins. Located in the western part of the country, the relics of this 7th century Mayan city are a must see for any traveler with an interest in the past.

    Planning Your Trip

    • The ideal time to visit Honduras is between February and June, when the rainy season is over and the hurricane season has yet to begin. The coastal rainy season in Honduras is between October and January. Hurricane season is from June to November.

Once you decide when you want to go, the next step is figuring out how you'll get to Honduras. The country has four international airports: San Pedro Sula, Roatan, Le Ceiba and Tegucigalpa. To get the best rate, keep your dates for travel flexible. Flying mid-week, from Tuesday to Thursday, often will result in cheaper rates.

    Caution

    • Honduras, with all of its beauty and serenity, is a wonderful spot to vacation. However, prepare yourself before you go to avert unwanted illness and crime.

Well in advance of your vacation, check with your doctor and the Center for Disease Control (www.cdc.gov) to see if there are any recommended immunizations. It is advisable to bring an over-the-counter anti-diarrhea medication, such as Imodium. You may also find that anti-bacterial cream and bandages come in handy in a pinch. While hospitals in Honduras are inexpensive, if you find yourself with a serious medical emergency, it is advisable to go to a private hospital or even leave the country and get care at home.

Travelers should be mindful that crime and political unrest are prevalent in Honduras. Because of this, tourists are urged to exercise caution. Pickpocketing, particularly in the major cities, is common and travelers should avoid wearing noticeable jewelry or carrying lots of cash.

Honduras has experienced some political turmoil in recent years, making certain parts of the country not ideal for tourism. On June 28, 2009, President Manuel Zelaya was ousted by the country's military. As a result, there is now a significant military presence in the capital city of Tegucigalpa and the situation is volatile.
