The Gaza Strip is a narrow, self-governing Palestinian territory located on the eastern coast of the Mediterranean Sea, bordered by Egypt to the southwest and Israel to the northeast. It lies on a strip of land approximately 45 kilometers (28 miles) long and between 6 and 12 kilometers (4 and 7 miles) wide, with a total area of 360 square kilometers (140 square miles). The Gaza Strip is separated from the West Bank by Israeli territory and has been under Israeli military occupation since 1967.
