The Five Tallest Monuments in the United States

Ranking by Structural Height

Monument definitions vary (habitable vs. non-habitable, masonry vs. steel). By architectural height to tip:

RankMonumentLocationHeight
1Gateway ArchSt. Louis, MO630 ft (192 m)
2Space NeedleSeattle, WA605 ft (184 m) (to tip of antenna)
3Washington MonumentWashington, D.C.555 ft (169 m) (stone obelisk)
4San Jacinto MonumentLa Porte, TX (Houston)567 ft (173 m) (often overlooked; taller than Washington Monument)
5Perry's Victory & International Peace MemorialPut-in-Bay, OH352 ft (107 m)

Notes

  • Statue of Liberty (305 ft / 93 m to torch) is shorter than these. On pedestal: 151 ft.
  • Mount Rushmore (60 ft heads) is a mountain carving, not a freestanding monument.
  • San Jacinto Monument (star-topped column) is actually the 2nd tallest at 567 ft, surpassing the Washington Monument. Many lists omit it.
  • Gateway Arch is the tallest arch and tallest man-made monument in the Western Hemisphere.

Rankings depend on criteria (occupied floor? tip? masonry only?). The above uses "tip height" for all.
