Nigrafall: A Hidden Waterfall in Western Iceland

Nigrafall is a picturesque waterfall on the Norðurá River in Þingeyjarsýsla county, western Iceland. Located about 63 kilometers (39 miles) north of Akureyri, it's a lesser-known gem in a region rich with waterfalls, geothermal features, and dramatic landscapes.

The name "Nigrafall" translates to "Dark Falls," possibly referencing the dark basalt rock formations surrounding the cascade or the shadowed gorge it plunges into. Like many Icelandic waterfalls, it's fed by glacial meltwater and seasonal runoff, making it most impressive in late spring and summer.

Access typically involves a moderate hike from the nearest road, rewarding visitors with a more secluded experience compared to Iceland's famous tourist-circuit falls. The surrounding area offers opportunities for birdwatching, photography, and exploring the rugged beauty of North Iceland's countryside.
