The first recorded human settlers in Iceland were Norsemen from Western Norway, led by Ingólfur Arnarson. While the exact date is unknown, most historians believe that Iceland was settled in the year 874 AD.
Discovery
While Ingólfur Arnarson is considered the first settler of Iceland, there is evidence that Irish monks may have visited Iceland as early as the 8th century AD. These early visitors did not establish any permanent settlements, however, and it was not until the arrival of the Norsemen that Iceland became a permanently inhabited land.
