Places to Go in Northern Ireland for Kids

Northern Ireland is famous for its scenery, with landscapes that include mountains, lakes and a coastline. Northern Ireland is also full of activities and places suitable for families that have children. Rich in history, culture and outdoor attractions, Northern Ireland has plenty of features to entertain and educate youngsters.
  1. Downpatrick and County Down Railway

    • Jump aboard Ireland's only full-sized heritage railway. Guests can board 50- to 100-year-old carriages on steam or diesel locomotives. Visitors travel into the County Down countryside and cross the River Quoile and into the remains of a 12th century monastery. Tour the remains or pack a picnic lunch and enjoy the Irish countryside. Special events for children include the Halloween Ghost Train and Santa Christmas Train specials. Merlin the Magician boards the train around Halloween, and children receive a prize if they make it past all of the ghosts. During the holidays, children can travel with Santa and sing Christmas songs along the way.

    Funky Monkeys

    • Funky Monkeys is an indoor children's play center and cafe. Mother and toddler play mornings at Funky Monkeys are full of activities that promote learning and development. There is a soft play structure for younger children, as well as a toddler play zone. Funky Monkeys' cafe is parent-friendly, serving healthful food that is still tempting to children, such as fruit smoothies and pasta dishes. The attraction also provides magazines, fresh ground coffee and cappuccino for the parents while the children run around in the play zones. Lurgan and Downpatrick are the two Funky Monkeys locations in Northern Ireland.

    Funny Farm Adventures

    • Funny Farm Adventures is located at the foot of the Mourne Mountains, between Newcastle and Castlewellan. Guests can find their way through a 6-acre maze, which is full of clues to find hidden objects. Once free, children can jump on the bouncy castle, visit the splash zone, ride go-karts or play giant garden games. Toddlers have their own play area and can enjoy face painting or visiting the small-animal petting zoo. Even the most active children will stay busy jumping on the trampoline, participating in laser clay shooting, climbing the rock wall and making their way through the monkey bars. There is no shortage of children's activities at Funny Farm Adeventures.
