Are there any tornadoes in Greece?

Although not as common as in other parts of the world, tornadoes do occasionally occur in Greece. The country experiences an average of around 10 to 15 tornadoes each year, with most of them occurring during the spring and summer months when thunderstorms are most frequent.

These tornadoes are typically weak and short-lived, with a majority falling into the EF0 or EF1 categories on the Enhanced Fujita Scale. However, there have been a few instances of stronger tornadoes causing significant damage in the past.

For example, in June 2017, a strong tornado struck the town of Nea Peramos on the Halkidiki peninsula, causing extensive damage to buildings and injuring several people. This tornado was rated as an EF3, making it one of the strongest tornadoes ever recorded in Greece.

Despite their rarity, tornadoes can still pose a threat to life and property in Greece, and it is important to take precautions during severe weather events, such as seeking shelter in a sturdy building and avoiding open areas.
