Spain, France, and England were the three main European powers that explored and made claims in the New World. Spain was the first European power to arrive in the Americas, and it claimed a vast territory that included much of Central and South America. France also claimed a large territory in North America, which it called New France. England claimed a smaller territory in North America, which it called the Thirteen Colonies.
