Wanderlust World Wanderlust World The Red Shirts (Italian: Camicie Rosse) were volunteer fighters led by Giuseppe Garibaldi during the Expedition of the Thousand (1860). They wore distinctive red shirts instead of formal uniforms.
Landing in Sicily with about 1,000 men, they conquered the island, crossed to the mainland, and advanced through southern Italy, handing over their conquests to Victor Emmanuel II. Their daring campaign was pivotal in the unification of Italy.
