The Munich Agreement of 1938, in which the Western powers (Britain, France, and Italy) allowed Germany to annex the Sudetenland region of Czechoslovakia in exchange for a promise not to further aggress, is often taken as the quintessential example of appeasement. In this case, appeasing Hitler failed to prevent further German aggression and ultimately led to the outbreak of World War II.
