Decide what kind of meal you want to have. Consider your budget, time limits and what kind of dining experience you desire. In a cafe or pizzererie, you can order pizzas, paninis or salads. Seating is limited and there is usually no table service. In an enoteca, or wine bar, you have a limited selection of dishes such as cheese plates, soups and occasionally, pastas. Full meals are served by waiters in a risorante or osterie.
Understand the menu sections. Italian menus are divided into several components. Antipasto, Primi and Secondi are appetizers, first plates and second plates, respectively. Dolci, or dessert, is found at the end of the dinner menu or on a different menu. Vino, or wine will be on a separate list.
Order food and drinks. In a cafe, pizzerie or enoteca, diners typically order at the counter, wait for their food and sit at a table. In a ristorante, you are usually expected to order at least two plates off of the menu, but there is no written rule. Order what you are comfortable with. For drinks, be aware that the tap water in Italy has a high calcium content, so the flavor may be different than what you are accustomed to. Most Italians order plain bottled water or sparkling water. Wine is served by the bottle, carafe or half carafe. Some restaurants offer a house wine as well.
Follow customs. Unlike many Western countries, Italians do not typically ask for their food to be altered. Do not request for dressings on the side or for your waiter to go "light" on the olive oil. Of course, if you have a major food allergy, then ask for foods that will be safe for you to eat. Refrain from cutting your pasta with a knife. If you're having trouble understanding something on the menu, don't be afraid to ask your waiter for assistance.
Pay your bill. Italians do not like to be rushed at dinner. Therefore, your waiter will almost never drop the check off at your table unless you ask for it. When you go over the charges, be aware that most restaurants charge a per person cover. Gratuity is also included in your bill. If you want to tip extra, you can, but probably no more than five euros.
