Food Festivals in Italy

Italy is known the world over for its agricultural offerings and exquisite cuisine. The various regions of Italy possess just the right climate and soils to produce their gastronomic specialties. In celebration of these foods, Italy throws lively festivals throughout the year to honor the products that have brought it prosperity.
  1. International White Truffle Fair

    • Pigs have a nose for truffles.

The International White Truffle Fair of Alba, Italy, is so large that it is held over a period of several weekends in the autumn. At the heart of this festival is the sublime, aromatic tuber that gourmands worldwide covet for their dishes. Visitors can purchase foods, art objects and souvenirs. A bit of pageantry, donkey races, and food of all sorts fill the weekends of the fair with fun and frivolity. Fairgoers can sample dishes made with truffles and take home some truffles as well.

    Garlic Festival of Voghiera

    • There are many ways to use garlic, including in ice cream.

Every August the Fiera dell'Aglio di Voghiera, or the Garlic Festival of Voghiera, is held on the grounds of the Castello del Belriguardo. Voghiera is a city in northern Italy in the Emilia-Romagna region. In addition to samples of garlic-laced foods (including garlic gelato), the festival features music and dancing. Fairgoers can join the competition for the best poem extolling the virtues of garlic, and visit the Archaeological Museum of Belriguardo.

    Artichoke Festival

    • Celebrate the artichoke at the Sagra del Carciofo Romanesco.

Sagra del Carciofo Romanesco, or the Festival of the Artichoke, is held each year in April in Ladispoli, located in the province of Rome in the Lazio region of Italy. Participating restaurants cook up special dishes featuring artichokes and offer them to fair visitors at a fixed price. The fair lasts for two weeks, giving plenty of opportunities to enjoy the artichoke dishes. The festival also features fireworks and live music. Other foods are also presented at this fair in celebration of all Italian foods, but the artichoke is the headliner.
