Restaurants by the Intercontinental Hotel in Frankfurt

Frankfurt's InterContinental Hotel towers 21 stories above the banks of the Main River, close to the heart of Germany's financial capital. Within easy walking distance of the hotel are the medieval Römer, Frankfurt's historic city hall; Paulskirche (St. Paul's Church), the birthplace of German democracy; Frankfurt Cathedral; and the city's main train station. Some of Frankfurt's best restaurants also can be found within a mile of the InterContinental.
  1. Apfelwein Wagner

    • Less than a mile from the InterContinental, this popular tavern has a warm and inviting ambience. The family-owned restaurant serves "apfelwein," a German type of apple cider with an alcohol content of 5.5 to 7 percent, and traditional German foods. Typical menu selections include a Frankfurt platter, which is made up of various cuts of pork, as well as pork sausage, all served with sauerkraut and mashed potatoes; baked veal knuckle with noodles and salad; and veal medallions with a creamy pepper sauce. Dessert dishes include apple strudel and homemade red fruit pudding, both served with vanilla ice cream.

    Frankfurter Botschaft

    • This sleek, modern restaurant sits on the northern bank of the Main River less than 500 yards from the hotel. The fare here is an interesting blend of traditional European cuisine with the increasingly popular culinary techniques and recipes of Asia. Sample entrees from the restaurant's dinner menu include Goa vegetable curry served with rice and homemade Indian breads; Argentinean rump steak cooked with green pepper and served with potatoes au gratin and mixed vegetables; Wiener schnitzel; and chicken breast, wok-roasted vegetables and shitake mushrooms served with rice and a sweet chili sauce.

    Im Herzen Afrikas

    • For a refreshingly different dining experience, this restaurant, located less than 300 yards from the hotel, is hard to beat. The English translation of its German name is "in the heart of Africa," and the staff here takes great pains to give diners an authentic sampling of African cuisine. And it's not just the food that's different. Diners sit low to the floor, which is covered in sand to better evoke the sense of being in Africa. The restaurant's owner, Asmorom Teckie, a native of Ethiopia, bakes the eatery's bread an hour before opening to ensure absolute freshness. The recipes are simple but deliciously prepared.

    Main Tower Restaurant & Bar

    • This starkly contemporary rooftop restaurant offers diners unparalleled views of Frankfurt and the river that flows through its center. The dining room sits 615 feet above the city streets and is a little over three-quarters of a mile from the hotel. The Main Tower offers a limited selection of multicourse, prix-fixe meals. A typical meal might begin with foie gras served with goat cheese and apple, followed up with a bouillon of spring chicken with cuttlefish and soya. The fish course could be roasted grey mullet with spinach, avocado and shrimp, followed by a main course of veal, young corn, carrots and vanilla. The meal would be topped off with a cup of the restaurant's trademark "white coffee." Depending on how hungry you are, the menu can be modified to drop certain courses for a corresponding reduction in overall price.
