Construction on the Fairmont Hotel in Vancouver, British Columbia started in 1928. It took 11 years to complete due to a five year pause in construction during the Great Depression. When the hotel opened in 1939, two of the first guests were King George IV and Queen Elizabeth. In the 1990s, the Fairmont Hotel was restored and upgraded. There are three restaurants in the Fairmont Hotel in addition to room-service available throughout the day and evening.
Tea at the Castle is located in the 900 West Lounge of the Fairmont Hotel. Each day during tea time the restaurant opens with a traditional tea house menu. Adults have a choice between traditional tea or champagne tea. Children are welcome to attend tea time and may choose to participate in a special children's celebration complete with tea in the castle. Reservations are not required, but they are encouraged.
Griffins is a buffet-style restaurant open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. This Fairmont Hotel dining spot has been recognized as a "best hotel restaurant" by the readers of a Canadian food magazine. Patrons can dine on the buffet or order meals a la carte from a breakfast or lunch/dinner menu. Children are welcome in the restaurant. A dedicated children's menu is available. Restaurant staff encourages reservations.
The 900 West Lounge offers a variety of dining experiences daily including lunch, a carvery and tapas. A bar is located inside the restaurant for adult guests. Tea Time at the Castle, located inside the 900 West Lounge, opens at tea time. Reservations are not necessary to dine in the restaurant but they are encouraged for tea time.
