Main Aims of the Copenhagen Climate Summit (2009)
The Copenhagen Accord (COP15) set five core objectives:
- Limit Warming: Hold global temperature rise ≤2°C above pre-industrial levels.
- Emission Cuts: Developed countries pledged 25–40% reduction below 1990 levels by 2020; developing nations encouraged voluntary actions.
- Finance & Technology: Mobilize $100B/year by 2020 for developing-country mitigation/adaptation, scaling up post-2020.
- Transparency: Countries to submit pledges (NDCs) and regular progress reports.
- Future Framework: Laid groundwork for subsequent COPs (Cancún, Durban, Paris) to strengthen commitments.
Though non-binding, the Accord established the 2°C target and climate finance architecture later formalized in the Paris Agreement.
