Why was Yugoslavia split into 5 countries?

Yugoslavia was split into 7 countries, not 5. The countries that were formed from Yugoslavia are Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Kosovo.

The country of Yugoslavia was created in 1918 after the end of World War I. It was made up of six constituent republics: Slovenia, Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Serbia, Montenegro, and North Macedonia. The seventh country, Kosovo, was recognised as a separate country by the United Nations in 2008.

Yugoslavia was a socialist federal republic until 1991, when the country began to break apart. The first to declare independence was Slovenia, followed by Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, and North Macedonia. Serbia and Montenegro remained in a union until 2006, when Montenegro also declared independence. Kosovo declared independence in 2008.

The breakup of Yugoslavia was a complex and bloody process. The Yugoslav Wars lasted from 1991 to 2001 and resulted in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of people.
